چکیده

We report a novel multi-step method for the preparation of ordered mesoporous titania scaffolds and show an illustrative example of their application to solar cells. The method is based on (monolayer) colloidal nanosphere lithography that makes use of polystyrene nanoparticles organised at a water–air interface and subsequently transferred onto a solid substrate. A titania precursor solution (titanium(IV) isopropoxide in ethanol) is then drop-cast onto the monolayer and left to ‘‘incubate’’ overnight. Surprisingly, instead of the expected inverse monolayer-structure, a subsequent calcination step of the precursor yields an ordered monolayer of hollow titania nanospheres with a wall thickness of B30–50 nm, and a slightly larger diameter than that of the starting spheres. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization of such scaffolds confirm that they consist of nanocrystalline anatase titania, and that any polystyrene/carbon residues in the scaffolds are below the XPS detection level. As an illustrative application we prepared perovskite solar cells incorporating the templated-nanoparticle scaffolds displaying a respectable power conversion efficiency of B9%, twice as large as that of our unoptimized ‘‘reference’’ cells (i.e. incorporating conventional mesoporous or compact titania scaffolds), thereby also demonstrating that the process is relatively robust with respect to optimization of the process parameters.

Liquid-gas boundary catalysis by using gold/polystyrene-coated hollow titania.

A microparticle material of gold/polystyrene-coated hollow titania was successfully synthesized. The synthesis steps involved hydrothermal synthesis of a carbon sphere from sucrose as a template, coating of the carbon sphere with titania, removal of the carbon sphere to produce hollow titania, followed by coating of polystyrene on the surface of hollow titania and then attachment of gold nanopa...

Moiré Nanosphere Lithography.

We have developed moiré nanosphere lithography (M-NSL), which incorporates in-plane rotation between neighboring monolayers, to extend the patterning capability of conventional nanosphere lithography (NSL). NSL, which uses self-assembled layers of monodisperse micro/nanospheres as masks, is a low-cost, scalable nanofabrication technique and has been widely employed to fabricate various nanopart...

Hexagonally ordered nanoparticles templated using a block copolymer film through Coulombic interactions.

We present a novel and simple method for forming hexagonal gold nanoparticle arrays that uses Coulombic interactions between negatively charged gold nanoparticles on positively charged vertically oriented poly(4-vinylpyridine) cylinders formed in a spin cast polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) block copolymer film. Exposure of the block copolymer film to dibromobutane vapor quaternizes and cros...

Synthesis and Characterization of Hollow and Non-Hollow Monodisperse Colloidal TiO2 Particles

Monodisperse spherical hollow and non hollow titania particles of variable sizes are produced in a sol gel synthesis from Ti(EtO)4 in ethanol. Hollow spherical particles of rutile were obtained by coating colloidal polystyrene beads with a titanium oxide hydrate layer and subsequently calcination at elevated temperatures in ol\ygen atmosphere. The non hollow titania particles were produced in t...

Synthesis of aligned single-walled nanotubes using catalysts defined by nanosphere lithography.

Synthesis of highly aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with controlled positions is an important step toward manufacturable ultradense carbon nanotube integrated circuits. One of the most promising synthesis methods is chemical vapor deposition (CVD), in which small catalyst particles with diameters of approximately a few nanometers determine the position and diameter of SWNTs.1 Sig...
